Michael Collins is a member of the Irish Traveller community who has been an advocate of Traveller human rights for over 20 years.
He has developed the Traveller Wagon Wheel Theatre Company which works with Travellers and other socially excluded and ethnic minority groups to allow them to tell their stories and issues in an artistic way.
Michael is an actor, writer and performer he has acted on stage in the Abbey and Olympia Theatres. Michael has written two plays “It’s a cultural thing or is it” and “Mobile” which he has spent the past two years performing in venues in Ireland, the UK and the US.
With the support of SEI, he now has the time and resources to put energy into developing the project which he feels will not only be of benefit to Travellers but to Irish society in general.
In 2012 Michael received a lifetime achievement award at the Traveller Pride Awards, which was presented by President Michael D. Higgins, for his 20 years of work in supporting traveller’s rights. He played a starring role in the 2013 movie, King of the Travellers.
