Approximately 700,000 people in Ireland use more than one language on a daily basis (CSO, 2016). Over 100 different languages are spoken in Ireland; on average, three children in every classroom speak a language other than English or Irish at home daily. Mother Tongues uses languages as tools to promote multiculturalism, building more inclusive, successfully integrated communities. Mother Tongues strengthens the capacity of key stakeholders to protect and promote cultural identity. It combats racism and social isolation by breaking down barriers to participation in cultural activities through advocacy, art, and education.

I feel that the work we do has huge potential to make a long lasting change in Irish society and this SEI award to me means that we will be able to focus our efforts to increase our impact and extend our reach.
