Overview
Dedicated to working directly with communities to make science more accessible and understandable, breaking down the barriers that often keep people from engaging with scientific topics.
The Problem
The planet is currently facing severe challenges due to climate change, and while people want to contribute to the solution, many feel overwhelmed by the scale of the problem. Additionally, with the rise of Artificial Intelligence and automation, it is predicted that over 30% of current jobs will become obsolete by 2035. This presents a daunting future, especially for those who are not well-versed in science or technology.
As a science communicator, Niamh Shaw frequently engages with families across Ireland who express a desire to understand these complex issues but lack the knowledge to even begin. Many people, particularly those from marginalised communities or with a negative experience of education, struggle to engage with topics that will significantly impact their future. Without a strong foundation in science, these communities may find it difficult to participate in conversations about technological changes and their implications for society. There is a clear need for someone to bridge the gap, translating complex scientific ideas into understandable information that empowers people to engage with and influence the future direction of their communities and Ireland as a whole.
The Solution
Town Scientist aims to bring scientific knowledge directly to communities, acting as a local, trusted science advisor. Niamh Shaw has piloted a study in Dundalk, Co. Louth, and Birr, Co. Offaly, working with marginalised groups.
Niamh working with Science Foundation Ireland, has brought together local stakeholders including Louth County Council, Louth Library, and the Louth ABC parent group, and Birr Castle Demesne to roll out the first small scale pilot study.
A larger pilot called the “Town Scientist Dundalk Deep Dive 2025″ is currently in planning and aims in 2025 to focus exclusively in the Dundalk region to work directly over a 9 month period with Louth County Council, Dundalk Credit Union and Louth ABC to deliver over 100 community-led, science-based activities designed to raise awareness of the impact of science on society. The aim is to help those who might not typically engage with science see the potential for rewarding careers in the field.

”I am so happy to finally meet like-minded people who value impact more than profitability in their business. I used to think that there was something wrong with me to fell this way about my business.... I feel that I've met my tribe and that's very reassuring.
